Is there a wall in your home or office needing a focal point? When buying art for a purpose, always consider the size, color and composition of the piece of fine art. Of course, it goes without saying that you should like what you decide to buy, after all, you can expect to own it for a long time!
The dimensions of the area, has an impact on your chosen print or painting. For example, a big office entrance is best befits a large work that could be right out of place in your home. You can change the look of an artwork with the mat (the coloured board around the painting) mat and frame colour and style. This can significantly alter the impact in the original piece itself. Blue reminds you of infinite space. It’s a cool colour so contrasts against warm colours like yellow, but navy tones (black added to brighter blue) feel dependable. Intense or dark blues suit a larger area, contrasted against pastel lemons or greens. A strong blue can make beige look muddy. Dark blues need light spaces, as they will take too much light from around them.
Yellow is a bright colour that makes people feel happy. Yellows are good for anywhere to create a happy mood. You can place a yellow work on a light or dark colour with good effect.
Greens are cheerful as they remind people of outdoors. They are calming and relaxing and reminds people of springtime. Use greens anywhere you want to give a feeling of peace.
Purple is suggestive of luxury and gives off an air of mystery. Light purples, include lilac and lavender can be placed on most backgrounds, be aware that darker purples may look out of place on blues.
Orange is bright and vibrant. It’s a learning colour so it can be used in high traffic areas, such as rumpus or activity rooms. Orange based paintings may look psychedelic on walls painted in yellows and blues.
Black and white are technically not colours but light and it’s absence, so can make a room feel stark. They are good to use for a bold effect and not introduce more colour, such as a B&W photograph.
